Medarot 5 was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Color. It was released on two versions: Kabuto and Kuwagata.

The game follows the adventures of Koishimaru Tensan, who has recently moved to the small town of Susutake. Koishimaru gets a new Medarotch and meets a boy named Yamato Shijimi, but his Medarotch breaks after he gets pushed into cow manure. He later finds an abandoned Medarotch and Medarot (Chrotojil (Kabuto) or Shinzan (Kuwagata)) inside of a tree and is forced to activate them in a sudden Robottle.

New features[edit]

  • The game features a new "combo" system in battles, where choosing parts with the winning symbol (rock, paper, or scissors) awards you bonuses like increased accuracy.
  • Medals now have branching forms that the player can choose between.
  • Medaforce is now called Medaskill.
  • The graphics are much more vibrant and detailed.
  • A whole new cast of characters.
  • The graphics enhance and minor storyline events change when played on a Game Boy Advance.
  • The game's plot is broken into days, and events open up day by day.
  • A more visual novel like system when interacting with major characters (Koishimaru's friends) Correct dialogue choices increase Koishimaru's affinity with his friends, leading to certain events.

Continuity and Placement[edit]

Both Medarot 5 and its sequel Medarot G take place significantly after Ikki's games and Medarot Navi. Enough to Ikki and his friends being already in their late teens, as seen in Medarot G.

Manga[edit]

An unfortunately rushed, manga adaption of Medarot 5 was penned by Horuma Rin and published in Comic Bom Bom in 2002. The sequel, Medarot G came out that year, but was the last until 2009, when Medarot was revived via Medarot DS. Some of the characters from 5 didn't appear in the Manga until Medarot G's Manga.

Trivia[edit]

Medarot 5 is a return to form. If you compare it to Medarot 1 and Medarotter Rintarou!!, and the similarities in plot beats are surprising.

  • Medarot 5 has elements of the original game, sans the Roborobo gang; but Black Mantle and the Ghosts, the Medal and Part thefts are similar, filling the same role. The endgame, however, is different.
  • Medarot 5 has a smaller scope (Susutake, is comparable to Hikaru's hometown), and no EX story after the credits (like Medarot 1), and Koishimaru finding Omeda/ Nekuu mirrors Hikaru and Bonaparte finding the Medals that'd be used in Metabee/Rokusho. Both Hikaru and Koishimaru are complete beginners at Medarotting too, but Koishimaru is similar to Rintarou in personality, while Hikaru was sarcastic, lazy and terse.
  • From Medarotter Rintarou, Medarot 5 clearly has a similar hot-booded and energetic youth (Koishimaru) joining and reforming a Medarot Club, much like Rintarou reforming the Damerot Club in Medarotter Rintarou. And, that same protag entering many tournaments, like both Medarot 1 and Medarotter Rintarou. Tsuguo stealing and trashing Hikoo's starter is very similar in spirit to Tonomi Angura stealing Kantaros and buying up every KBT-2020 Model so Rintarou cannot fight him -- as both boys (Tsuguo, Tonomi) want to get over and not be weak, so they cheat and steal, but have differing reasons.
  • Like Medarotter Rintarou, with Ryou Kaiba using Mach Massive and counters Rintarou's Kantaros, the Rival, Hikoo uses a KWG type if the Player is playing the Kabuto version.

There are prominent rumors Medarot 5 was rushed in production. It is obvious, but these rumors unfortunately have weight. There are missing events, the unobtainable Boy and Girl Medals, the Fruit family Medarots, and certain parts cannot be obtained. Also, the game apparently was criticized as Ikki wasn't the protagonist, so reception may have been mixed. It is the Pokemon Black and White of the Medarot series, this can be said for sure.
